Semantic segmentation of point clouds for underground utilities
Client: LandsD and Castco
LiDARist develops a domain-driven deep learning solution to conduct semantic segmentation of 3D point clouds collected by photogrammetric cameras and LiDAR systems for open-trench underground utilities (UUs). The deep learning model is capable of classifying different UUs, including pipe fittings, elbows (22.5°, 45°, and 90°), joints, valves, flanges, bend boxes, control targets, etc, with overall accuracy achieved 90%.

Quality check on 3D point clouds of underground utilities
Client: WSD
LiDARist rides on the existing development of point cloud semantic segmentation to automatically detect control targets on UUs. The domain-driven software tool extracts control targets from UU point clouds and computes the root-mean-squared error with the coordinates measured by traditional land surveying technique, i.e., total station. The software tool can help improve the efficiency of stakeholders to assess the locational accuracy of UUs being laid prior to backfilling.

As-built BIM reconstruction for underground utilities
Client: Ptech and LandsD
LiDARist integrates an in-house scan-to-BIM process for pipework* to generate digital 3D models and BIMs for UUs after 3D semantic segmentation. The process includes automatic reconstruction of piperun, automatic placement of UU appurtenances, and a fine adjustment of UU objects with a topological checker. All the pipes and appurtenances are spatially connected in the BIM and 3D GIS platform. The tool can help summarize information for the pipework, such as pipe dimension, number and type of appurtenances, etc.

LiDARist offers an all-in-one solution for real-time settlement monitoring on a major highway with tunnel construction underneath in Hong Kong. LiDARist introduces the state-of-the-art scanning total station for real-time collection of laser points on the road surface and generates digital surface models (DSMs) for temporal monitoring. A real-time GIS dashboard displays the collected data points and DSMs, and alerts stakeholders if significant deformation occurs.
